Cosmos Education is grateful to its dedicated board of advisors. Their input, assistance, and vision is essential to our success.

Board of Advisors

Dr. Mazlan Othman, Director, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, Austria, Vienna.
Professor Othman has been a tremendous source of information and ideas for Cosmos Education and the Under African Skies project. Additionally, Professor Othman has, and will continue to serve, as a primary resource for information on potential corporate sponsors and foundations with an interest in the activities of Cosmos Education.
Dr. Lance Bush, NASA Headquarters, Washington D.C., U.S.A.
Along with his work at NASA, Dr. Bush has also managed to find time to play a critical role in bringing young minds together to explore the issues behind the peaceful uses of outer space. In July of 1999, Lance helped organize and run the UNıs UNISPACE III Space Generation Forum. It was this event that first brought together many of the members our Cosmos Education team. As a result, he is in part responsible for the formation of this organization. We will be looking to Lance for advice on a host of issues from managerial tips to NGO connections, his advice and inspiration will be invaluable.
Angaluki Muaka, Kiswahilli Lecturer, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA.
Maintaining a program that is both effective and culturally sensitive is critical to the success of Cosmos Education. Professor Muaka, originally from Kenya, has been a great help as Cosmos Education works to address science and technology in the developing countries of Africa. Language bariers, customs, and traditions can easily set up immediate barriers between two cultures; working with Professor Muaka has helped Cosmos Education address many of these issues. His continuing support and input will be extremely valuable to our program.
Greg Schmidt, Director, Astrobiology Integration Office, NASA Ames Research Center. Moffett Field, CA, USA.
From working on an historic space shuttle flight to helping define a roadmap for NASA's search for life in the Universe, Greg Schmidt's knowledge of science, the environment, and managing large programs, has been a great resource for Cosmos Education. He has donated his time and energy to helping Cosmos Education develop and plan the 2001 Under African Skies program. If his schedule allows, we hope to see Greg in Lusaka, Zambia for the teacher/student 2001 Eclipse Conference.
Professor Karl Doetsch, President, International Space University, Strasbourg, France.
As president of the International Space University, Professor Doetsch is intimately familiar with the multi-disciplinary nature of space studies and the multi-cultural implications of the science and technology associated with space research. Along with playing a critical role in defining education in these areas, he has played key roles in space policy and implementation - most notably as president of the International Astronautical Federation and as director general of the Canadian Space Agencyıs work on the International Space Station. The advice and experience of Professor Doetsch will help Cosmos Education develop programs that can address the issues of space science and technology in a culturally sensitive and appropriate manner.
Kathleen Connell, Deputy Director, Astrobiology Integration Office, NASA Ames Research Center. Moffett Field, CA, USA.
With her diverse background in the NGO sector and her experience with NASA, Ms. Connell has been fundamental in helping lay the foundations for Cosmos Education. Her continuing involvement will be of great help in every aspect; from sharing in our vision to directing us toward potential donors and sponsors. Kathleen helped with the year 2000 education expedition and is particularly well versed in the topics of sustainability and the societal implications of globalization.
Graham Gibbs, Canadian Space Agency, Washinton D.C., USA.
Given his experience with the issues of science and technology on the international level, Graham Gibbs is an invaluable member of our board. Along with his work with the Canadian Space Agency, Mr. Gibbs has been very influential in determining the global role and priorities of the International Astronautical Federation. His advice, knowledge, and wisdom will help guide our program and direct our decisions.
Donald James, Director, Education and Outreach Office, NASA Ames Research Center. Moffet Field, CA, USA.
Organizing, directing, and defining a significant portion of the education and outreach program at the world's largest space agency is no easy task. Yet Don James has managed to do this and more. His hard work and vision has had a positive influence on young minds all over the United States. He has been a great resource of ideas for Cosmos Education, and some of his programs may be coordinated with Cosmos Education during the 2001 Eclipse Conference.
Dr. Charles Cockell, Biologist, British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, U.K.
As a biologist who has conducted valuable research at both poles of the planet (...and virtually all points in-between), Dr. Cockell's input and advice with regard to the science program of Cosmos Education will be of critical importance. His research has ranged from molecular biology and genetics to global warming and the search for life on other planets. Charlie traveled to South Africa in Janaury of 2000 and together with Kevin Hand of Cosmos Education, he conducted extensive research on the four asteroid impact craters of South Africa. His multi-disciplinary range of skills and knowledge will be of great help to Cosmos Education.
